Help
Bodily Injury Liability

What it covers: In an accident where you are found to have been at fault, this feature pays for the medical treatment and rehabilitation incurred by another driver, the other driver's passengers, passengers in your car, and pedestrians. It also pays legal costs and settlements for nonmonetary losses, such as pain and suffering.

What's available: In Connecticut, coverage limits can be as low as the state minimum of $20,000 per person and $40,000 total per accident or as high as $500,000 per person and $1,000,000 total per accident. This is often referred to as a "split limit" of liability because it divides the coverage available between each injured person and the total amount per accident. Many companies also offer a combined "single limit" of liability, for instance, $300,000. This provides an aggregate amount of coverage that can be applied to either one or more injured parties without limitation, subject to the total "single limit" of liability.

What to consider: Most financial consultant feel that if you own a home, have savings and investments, and have a stable, reasonably well-paying job, you should buy at least $250,000 per person, $500,000 per accident, or preferably $300,000 on a combined single-limit basis. While lower limits are available, they should only be considered when there is little income or few assets to protect.
Help
Property Damage Liability

What it covers: Repair or replacement of other people's vehicles or property that someone insured on your policy damages in an accident.

What's available: In Connecticut, drivers are required to maintain at least a minimum of $10,000 in Property Damage Liability, with higher limits to $100,000 available. With a combined "single limit" of liability policy, for instance, $300,000, Property Damage Liability coverage is included in the amount that you purchase.

What to consider: The minimums available in Connecticut don't come close to covering potential losses. Consider at least $100,000 in protection or purchase a single-limit policy that includes this coverage.

Help
Medical Payments or Basic Reparations Benefits

What it covers: Also referred to as "med pay," it pays physician bills, hospital bills, and rehabilitation costs for you and your passengers when injured in an accident, regardless of fault. "BRB" is a broader form of med pay that, in addition to medical expenses, includes a portion of lost wages and the cost of in-home assistance.

What's available: In Connecticut, this coverage is optional, and you can usually buy it in increments of $1,000 or $5,000, with some carriers offering coverage up to a total of $100,000. There is no deductible. With BRB, you also have the option to increase the weekly loss-of-wages component.

What to consider: Your personal or group health insurance plan probably covers you and your household already. Of you are not covered elsewhere, or if you have high insurance co-payments or deductibles, you may want to purchase a higher amount of BRB to cover what your health or disability insurance will not. Self-employed individuals without disability coverage should strongly consider BRB.
Help
Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage

What it covers: Often referred to as "UM/UIM" coverage, it pays you and members of your household for medical costs, rehabilitation, funeral costs, and losses from pain and suffering resulting from either a hit-and-run driver or a driver who lacks sufficient insurance or who has no insurance at all.

What's available: In Connecticut, this coverage is mandatory. Limits are similar to those of Bodily-Injury liability. You also have the option of buying either a reduced or higher amount. A more comprehensive version of Uninsured Motorists coverage, entitled "Conversion" coverage (UIMC), is also available. UIMC benefits are not reduced by payments received from any other source.

What to consider: This coverage is essential, especially in a densely populated state such as Connecticut, where too many people drive without insurance. Legal experts recommend buying at least the same amount of coverage as your Bodily-Injury coverage limit and to consider purchasing the maximum additional amount that you can afford.
Help
Comprehensive

What it covers: Comprehensive pays for replacement or repairs after your car has been stolen or damaged as a result of events such as fire, flood, vandalism, or contact with an animal such as a deer.

What's available: Insurers sell this coverage subject to a deductible, which can range from $100 to a high of $1,000.

What to consider: Consider the book value of your vehicle before automatically purchasing this protection, which can be expensive. Your agent will be able to provide you with resources to help determine both book value and the price levels at various deductible options. The bigger the deductible you're comfortable with, the more you will save. If your vehicle is leased or has an outstanding loan, you will be required to carry this coverage.
Help
Collision

What it covers: Collision pays for the repair of your car or its replacement - at market value - as the result of an accident, regardless of who was at fault.

Help
Towing Coverage

What it covers: The cost of towing your disabled vehicle.

What's available: Towing coverage is typically sold in increments of @35, with premiums usually less that@10 per vehicle.

What to consider: Having towing coverage on your auto policy while also being a member of a travel service such as AAA may not make sense. Moreover, many auto manufacturers now also incorporate emergency roadside service, including towing, into their warranties. Check out alternative coverage before buying.
Help
Rental Reimbursement Coverage

What it covers: The expense of leasing a rental while your auto is being fixed after an accident.

What's available: Rental Reimbursement is usually offered at a $15, $30, or $50 per day limit for up to 30 days. Costs can range from $15 to $35 per vehicle, although some companies do include minimum coverage with your collision protection.

What to consider: Consider buying Rental Reimbursement if you have only one car or no alternative transportation, especially if you use your car in the course of your business. With daily rental rates escalating, higher limits, like $50/day, should relieve you of any out-of-pocket costs.

Additions & Alterations

What it covers: This protection provides coverage on interior parts of your unit which you may be responsible for insuring according to your condominium declaration and/or bylaws. This can include upgraded interior features such as wall to wall carpeting, lighting fixtures, wall coverings, counter tops, flooring, appliances, etc.

What to consider: In Connecticut, condo associations can elect to either cover virtually everything under their master policy ("All-In" protection) in which case you may need very little additional coverage -or- only for what the original unit contained when it was originally built ("Original Specifications") in which case you will need to determine what has been upgraded within your unit. You should first check with your association or property manager to determine what you are responsible for, and then consult with your agent to determine the proper amount of additions & alterations coverage to select.
Help
Loss Assessment

What it covers: This gives you protection against financial loss if damage to commonly owned property exceeds the amount of coverage in your association's master policy. In other words, if your condominium association is forced to assess all unit-owners for the additional loss (or for personal liability claims against the association), you're covered.

What to consider: Associations with a smaller number of unit-owners may be at higher risk in the event of an assessment resulting from an under-insured claim. Since this coverage is relatively inexpensive, consider higher limits such as $10,000 or more.
Help
Personal Property

What it covers: Your general household belongings, such as furniture, clothing, appliances, computers, home entertainment systems, and kitchenware.

How much coverage do you get?: Condo and Renters policies do not automatically include a set coverage amount. You must select a coverage amount based on what you estimate it would cost to replace all your personal contents.

What to consider: Households with certain high-value items such as jewelry, furs, silverware, fine arts, antiques, or other collectibles should consider insuring these items separately. This will provide much broader protection for these items and also eliminate your deductible.
Help
Personal Liability

What it covers: This protects you in the event that you are sued for bodily injury or property damage caused by your negligence. Coverage applies, both on and off the residence premises, to any loss of a personal nature. However, there is no coverage for losses arising out of intentional acts, business pursuits, full-time household help, and certain watercraft.

How much coverage do you get?: The policy automatically provides $100,000 in coverage with an option to increase coverage up to $500,000. Coverage for legal defense and court costs is included at no additional charge.

What to consider: Your home is probably your most important asset, and you can't afford to lose it. For relatively little additional cost, consider purchasing at least $300,000 of coverage. For those with a higher asset base - or multiple exposures, such as rental property, pets, a swimming pool, watercraft, a trampoline - consider the purchase of a Personal Umbrella policy, where additional limits start at $1,000,000.

Dwelling Coverage

What it covers: Your home and any structures attached to it, subject to the policy deductible. Coverage is written on a "covered unless excluded" basis. This means that you are covered for any type of loss that is not specifically excluded. A full list of exclusions may be found in your policy and generally include earthquake, flood, war, intentional acts, and ordinary wear and tear.

How much coverage do you need?: The amount of coverage you purchase should reflect the full cost to rebuild your home from the foundation up. This is not necessarily the same as market value, tax assessment, or mortgage amount. Your agent can assist you in estimating your cost to rebuild. While some policies give you the option of insuring your home to only 80% or 90% of its replacement value, a substantial loss will leave you responsible for the balance of the rebuilding cost.

What to consider: Most companies recommend insuring your home to its full replacement cost. This means that your home is insured to 100% of the cost of rebuilding at current market prices.

Personal Property

What it covers: Your general household belongings, such as furniture, clothing, appliances, computers, home entertainment systems, and kitchenware.

How much coverage do you get?: Most companies automatically insure your furniture and other personal possessions for a limit equal to 50% or 60% of the amount for which your home is insured.

What to consider: Households with certain high-value items such as jewelry, furs, silverware, fine arts, antiques, or other collectibles should consider insuring these items separately. This will provide much broader protection for these items and also eliminate your deductible.
